Louisiana Megan's Law

Being named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was enacted into federal law in 1995. Megans Law makes it mandatory for all states develop a procedure for informing the public when a sexual offender is relocated into their community.
Megan was merely seven years old when a repeat sexual offender that lived accross the street from her family, kidnapped, violently rapped, and killed her. It was concluded that if her family or other local residents had been aware that a previous sexual offender was residing in their community, this assult would have been avoided. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress enacted the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", also known as Megan's Law, without any objections.
Ever since the law was passed, Louisiana has made it a point to protect its residents the most recent information regarding convicted sexual offenders and their whereabouts. The law has confirmed that while sex crimes are still a problem in the U.S., offenses committed by past offenders are on a downturn.
